Which Bronco Has the Most HP?
Jan 08, 2024
In today's automotive world, we are truly spoiled for power. Gone are the days when a 200hp car was considered a performance vehicle. Now, even base models pack a hefty punch. In the realm of rugged, off-road capable machines, the Ford Bronco stands out. But which Bronco has the most HP?
Which Bronco Has the Most HP?
As far as the most powerful Bronco goes, you’ll have to turn to the Ford Bronco Raptor which offers 418hp from its six-cylinder Raptor engine.
The Raptor represents the top-end Bronco with the largest, most powerful, and most desirable powertrain.
Which Engines Are Available for the Ford Bronco?
The base engine is a 2.3L turbo inline 4-cylinder EcoBoost, delivering 275 to 300 horsepower on premium fuel, showcasing a blend of efficiency and power suitable for everyday driving and moderate off-roading.
If that’s simply not enough for you, the 2.7L twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost is available, producing up to 330 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft and of torque, offering a robust option for more demanding terrains and enthusiasts who desire extra power and more tunability with a V6.
The pinnacle of Bronco's performance is seen in the Bronco as mentioned above Raptor, featuring a 3.0L V-6 engine with a remarkable 418 horsepower, tailor-made for extreme off-road adventures and high-performance demands.
Each engine in the Bronco lineup is designed to provide a unique driving experience, ensuring a Bronco to suit various needs. With that in mind, let’s talk about making even more horsepower with the Bronco.
How Much Horsepower Can a Tuned Bronco Make?
The 2.7-liter EcoBoost model with a 93-octane tune, new cold air intake, intercooler, and exhaust system can add another 30-50 horsepower and 50-75 ft/lbs of torque. With upgraded turbos, the power can be pushed to as high as 600 horsepower and 650 ft. lbs of torque.
Factory-approved tunes also offer significant gains. For the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, a Ford Performance tune can add 30 horsepower and 60 lb-ft, resulting in total outputs of 330 hp and 385 lb-ft. The 2.7-liter models can gain 25 hp and 18 lb-ft from their respective tune, totaling 355 hp and 433 lb-ft.
Additionally, with a decent Supercharger Stage 1 Upgrade Kit on the Bronco, you can add almost 60 HP and 80 lb-ft of torque to the wheels. This tuning usually involves flash tuning the Bronco's power control module (PCM).
These figures indicate that with the right combination of tuning and modifications, the Ford Bronco can achieve significant increases in horsepower. If this is not enough for you, you should focus on larger displacement tuned engines instead.
Why Isn’t There a V8 Bronco?
Well, the main reason is likely due to production strategy and production processing as the Bronco has to be assembled on the same production line as the Ford Ranger. The chassis which these two share wasn’t designed to house an 8-cylinder engine.
Even though some have said that the engine bay can house a V8, production facility constraints simply didn’t envision the V8 engine within the Bronco chassis. To be frank, the Ford Bronco DR is offered with a V8 Coyote engine that makes upwards of 400hp, but it costs more than $250,000 and isn’t even road-legal.
It is designed as the ultimate Baja-inspired off-road Bronco that is capable of going over insanely challenging terrain.
Is There an Electric Bronco?
Currently, there are no electric or hybrid models of the Bronco. As it stands, Ford isn’t likely to release one soon since they only offer the Ford Mustang Mach-E as a true Ford-badged EV. Some do believe that an electric and a plug-in hybrid version of both the Ranger and the Bronco will arrive before 2030.
If that does indeed happen, chances are that these won’t be using the same powertrain as in the Mach-E, but rather a next-gen EV platform with larger batteries and faster charging speeds.
